昆汀的《好莱坞往事》不是一部关于“曼森杀人家族”的电影，而是一部好莱坞主旋律电影。
讲述里昂纳多扮演的好莱坞演员，布拉德皮特扮演的好莱坞替身，以及李小龙、八岁童星，垂垂老矣的片场老板，异国导演.....，所有这些好莱坞的奋斗者，在社会转型，西部片没落的时代转折口，努力，挣扎，解脱的一切。
光鲜的生活背面，是每一个顶着巨大压力的好莱坞人。8岁孩童为了拍摄可以不吃饭，Rick Dalton 需要酒精麻醉自己，李小龙需要以不容置疑的口吻，不断证明自己，而替身Cliff Booth 则需要主卡去求的一个个替身机会。
至于好莱坞——有无数热爱电影的人一起奋斗，才成就了好莱坞。
