The Alt + Tab experience broken down by this update

Windows 10 cumulative update KB5005033 was released by Microsoft earlier this month as part of the August 2021 Patch Tuesday cycle, and in addition to several important fixes for the operating system, it looks like it’s also causing some problems on devices where it’s installed.

More specifically, a report from WL points to a series of complaints coming from users whose devices are already running cumulative update KB5005033 and where the Alt + Tab experience has stopped working.

As it turns out, cumulative update KB5005033 is the one to blame for the whole thing, as Alt + Tab is no longer working properly, and some users claim that uninstalling this update brings things back to normal.

Of course, this isn’t necessarily the most convenient workaround, but on the other hand, another solution that seems to be fixing things is disabling the News and Interests experience pinned to the taskbar.

Microsoft is yet to acknowledge the new issue, so for the time being, it’s hard to tell how many users are actually struggling with this bug.

Cumulative update KB5005033 introduced a fix for the Point and Print bug, finally resolving this security issue by changing the default privilege requirement.

As far as the known issues are concerned, there’s only one new problem acknowledged by Microsoft, and it concerns Windows Server.

“After installing this update, the Encrypted File System (EFS) API OpenEncryptedFileRaw(A/W), often used in backup software, will not work when you back up to or from a Windows Server 2008 SP2 device. OpenEncryptedFileRaw will continue to work on all other versions of Windows (local and remote),” Microsoft says.

New optional cumulative updates to replace KB5005033 are due later this month, but it remains to be seen if a fix for this bug is included or not.
