三十多年前，当张聪渊开始他的运动鞋生意时，因为负担不起普通工厂的费用，他把台湾西部一处稻田旁的养猪场改造成了工厂。今天，他创立的华利实业集团（Huali Industrial Group）每年生产超过1.8亿双鞋，客户包括 Nike（耐克）、Converse（匡威）、Puma（彪马）、Vans、Columbia（哥伦比亚）等。
华利集团今年4月在深圳上市，其股价至今已飙升162%至90.04元人民币，这使得拥有华利87%股份的张聪渊及其家族成为了中国台湾首富，超过了富士康集团(Foxconn Technology Group)的郭台铭。根据彭博亿万富翁指数（Bloomberg Billionaires Index），目前张聪渊及其家族的资产净值超过了130亿美元。
