Sony Releases a New PS5 That's Slightly Lighter Than the Original

Sony has upgraded both PS5 models in order to shed a few grams, and made some other minor improvements too.

Does the constant threat of TV stand collapse plague your PS5 gaming sessions? Well, you're in luck, as Sony has just released a new PS5 model, which tips the scales at 7.9 lbs (3.6 kg) as opposed to the previous 8.6 lbs (3.9 kg) if you buy the digital version, and 9.6 lbs (formerly 9.9 lbs) if you buy the disc version.

Before you rejoice at this incredible revelation in console form factors, you should know the new model isn't available everywhere, yet...

Sony Reduces PS5 Weight With New Model Number

Australian gamers have awoken to quite the honor; Sony has just released a new version of the disc edition PS5 console and the land down under is the first territory to receive it.

So what is so new about the console? Well, we've mentioned that Sony has slimmed it down somewhat. It is now approximately 7% lighter, which is great news if your TV stand is teetering on its maximum load-bearing capacity...

According to a report on Australia's PressStart.com.au, the screw that holds the base stand in place now features a plastic head with a grooved edge, making it easier to install with your fingers and taking the need for a screwdriver out of the equation.

Right now, nobody knows what Sony has done to reduce the weight of the console, though; we'll have to wait for official comment.

When Will Sony Release the New Model Elsewhere?

Given that the new console is rolling out in Australia, we would imagine that you'll see the new lighter version of the console hitting shelves across the world pretty soon. Sony hasn't confirmed when it will roll the new PS5 model out elsewhere, though. At least, not yet.

In fact, Sony has (as usual) remained resolutely silent on the matter; the only clue that anything had changed was the new model number, which is now CFI-1102A. If you see this on the ID sticker on the side of your PS5 box, you know you've got the new lighter model.

Now you can throw all your screwdrivers away in celebration because you won't need those stupid things for turning the base stand screw, either.

Are You Going to Buy a PS5?

If you don't have one already, the likelihood is that you'll end up with one of the new PS5 models. However, with console supply still not meeting demand, people are struggling to get hold of a console at all. With that in mind, it might be best to wait until 2022 to get your hands on one.

If you can wait that long, of course.
