芯片短缺问题仍然严重影响着汽车行业，而且这一问题仍没有缓解迹象。去年由于疫情的影响，汽车制造商被迫关闭工厂；现在在全球供应链中断的情况下，汽车业者还要面对庞大的消费电子行业对芯片的激烈竞争。最新的麻烦出现在日本、菲律宾、泰国、越南和马来西亚等汽车厂和芯片厂集中的亚洲国家，这些地方新冠病例激增，当局被迫实施更严格的防疫限制措施。日本丰田汽车此前基本上设法避免了减产，得益于 2011 年地震和福岛核事故后实行的芯片储备政策。但这家全球汽车销量最高的汽车制造商周四称，9 月全球产量将比原先计划减少 40%，影响到日本和其他地区的 14 家工厂，包括其大部分北美工厂。德国大众也表示，由于芯片供应瓶颈，该公司可能需要进一步削减产量。
