Top public relations at Chinese social media giant arrested on bribery charges
August 12, 2021 11:25 pmThe former marketing and public relations director for Chinese microblogging site Weibo was arrested by Chinese authority on bribery charges.

Mao Taotao, who started working for Weibo in 2010, has been arrested for bribery. In a statement, Weibo said Mao had seriously harmed the interest of the company, thus he will never be employed by Weibo again.
“Based on company policy and law, we have decided to fire Mao as punishment, and will not re-hire him, the punishment of this can once again demonstrate our zero-tolerance attitude towards fraud” Weibo said in an internal memo.
Last week, Weibo removed “Star Power Ranking list” from its platform as Chinese authorities is cracking down on China’s fan culture.
Context:
Chinese tech companies have increased scrutiny on corruption investigations in recent years.
Earlier this year, a former vice-president of Kuaishou was arrested for alleged corruption, while Tencent Holdings said one of its company executives was being investigated by authorities over allegations of personal corruption. Tencent said it fired more than 100 employees who involved in about 60 corruption cases between October 2019 and February 2021.
