Creating A Product Vision

A mind map with key steps & deliverables

TL;DR: If you are interested in building a product vision, or you are looking for process & deliverables for product vision 👉 this mind map may help you. The rest of this article explains this map.

Influence as designers

Before we dive into building a product vision, I would like to talk about the “why ” part. There is no doubt that the goal of a product vision is to deliver a valuable product with a delightful experience and business impact. On the other hand, it is also an opportunity for designers to be the user ambassadors and influence objective drafting.

  • By envisioning 2–5 years from now, the focus shifting from immediate outcome to values.
  • Feasibilities are not the concern, and designers have the freedom to explore.
  • The influence can pass all the way to team roadmaps, end of the pyramid.

The product strategy pyramid

The Process

1. Align: get stakeholders on board and build a team

Driving a product vision end-to-end is a valuable experience because it helps develop management skills. Before initiating a project, be very clear about the purpose, key steps, and contributors(the team to form the vision). Plus, make a stakeholder map and define communication strategy. When all are settles, organize a kick-off meeting to bring everyone on board, and most importantly, to understand the needs of your stockholders at an early stage.

2. Understand: understand users, market, business, technology and problems to solve

There are many activities in the “understand” phase, the most important phase. The goal is not to conduct all of the exercises listed below but to understand what problems to solve. This phase is mainly about research and phrase problem statements for each prospective(users, the market, business, and technology). Depends on the priority and nature of the product, conclude the phase with a comprehensive product statement.

Envision: define principles, opportunities and create your vision

This phase requires creativity and teamwork. After understanding the problems and current situation, it is time to establish product principles, dreaming about the future, and visualise it. Defining opportunity is not that hard. With clear problems at hand, teams can brainstorm together with everyones’ expertise and knowledge.

Strategise: create a strategy and bring your vision to life

This phase starts with concept validation and stakeholder buy-in. Once you are settled, follow it to creating a road map to implement the vision. Focus on the outcome and how you can measure the success. Also, team up with product people during the break-down. You will gain a better understanding of how product decisions are made. And how to locate resources, solve dependence, overcome technical challenges and meet business requirements.
