色，色相，是我们对事物的理解，是我们赋予事物的意义，是主观的东西。
与之相对的，是事物本来的样子，也称实相。
比如，一块腐肉，在我们看来，自然是又烂又臭、毫无用处的垃圾。而对于细菌来说，则是饕餮盛宴。垃圾是我们赋予腐肉的色相，盛宴是细菌赋予腐肉的色相。而这些色相跟腐肉本身有什么关系呢？可以说没什么关系。所以说，色即是空。
