There's a New Player in the Smart Home Industry... and It's Nokia

Did you love Nokia's phones? You may fall in love all over again with the company's new smart light switches.

When you think of Nokia, you'll likely imagine the designer of the near-indestructible phones that stormed the market around the turn of the 21st Century. Now, the company is trying its luck in the smart home market with a range of light switches.

Nokia's Debut Into the Smart Home Industry

Pocket-lint spotted Nokia's entry into making smart devices. For a first-timer, Nokia has made a big splash in the market by releasing some really interesting designs.

You can take a peek for yourself over on Nokia's new smart home store, SmartLabs. If you're in the US, you can even buy some of Nokia's new products right away. Unfortunately, the company hasn't announced if it intends to go international or not with these products.

Most of Nokia's smart home products are standard fare, such as a dial to adjust light and a paddle switch. However, one of the switches for sale is called a "keypad" and comes with four push switches in one unit.

The idea behind the keypad is that you can assign each button with a specific lightscape. For example, if you want to adjust the brightness of your bulbs with the press of a button, you can assign each switch to different levels of light and press the one that tickles your fancy at any given time.

Best of all, Nokia can do all the button labeling for you. For some extra cash, you can order a custom-made engraved panel that has whatever you like on each button. Want to have a panel that describes the brightness level for each button? How about buttons for work, play, cinema, or other activities? You name it, Nokia will make it.

Right now, the products aren't ready to ship out. If you do buy anything from the store at the time of writing, Nokia will send it over to you by September 2021. However, this is both a promising and interesting beginning for Nokia's entry into the smart home industry, and we'll have to see how it pans out for the company.

Nokia: Connecting People (With Their Lights)

Nokia is a surprise entry in the smart home field, but it's definitely not an unwelcome one. The company's starting range is already looking strong, and we have high hopes that Nokia will continue with this promising trend.

If you'd rather not wait, there are plenty of great smart home light switches already on the market. It's a good idea to buy smart devices that have a good reputation behind them, because taking a gamble on quality can end poorly.
