China prioritize female scientists and researchers in job recruitment and research funding

China prioritize female scientists and researchers in job recruitment and research funding

China will give priority to female scientists in talent recruitment and research funding grants, according to a policy document released by China’s Ministry of Science and Technology (MST).

According to the document, age limits will be eased for female scientists who apply for the national talent recruitment programmes . With the same qualification, Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS)and Chinese Academy of Engineering (CAE) should prioritize female candidate over female for the application of academician.

In addition, research projects will be extended for female researchers who have been on maternity leave.

Context:

Female scientist still account for very little percentage of Chinese academician despite their high labour force participation rate.

In 2019, 49 percent of all university degree holders were women, but women only account for 10% of experts and scholars who have been nominated for the national talent recruitment programs, female scientists only account for 6 percent and 5.3 percent of CAS and CAE academician, according to the data released by the National Bureau of Statistics,

The policy document came against the backdrop that China started to address the gender gap in 2011 when the National Women’s Federation jointly issued a policy to boost the career development of women in science and technology.
