Working from home can be a dream! The commute is only a short walk from your bed to your desk, you can work in pyjama pants and you have the ability to play with your pet on lunch breaks… It truly has many awesome benefits.

But it’s not without drawbacks. Many people are finding their work and life are out of balance, working extra long hours and are cutting back on socialising.

What exactly is a ‘burn out’?

“Burnt out” can be a mental and emotional roadblock of sorts, an indicator of a lot of stress and a sign that you should switch things up.

Here are 5 of the major signs of burn out that i’ve gathered from my research –

  • Waking up is a nightmare

Mondays suck, that is a universal fact. Just ask Garfield, the beloved cartoon cat. Although I’m not sure why a cat would hate Mondays when all they do is eat and sleep!

Did you find that you only needed one alarm to wake up, and now you need 5?

Are you often dreaming about calling in sick to stay home watching Netflix all day?

If you used to look forward to (or at the very least, not hate) waking up for work but now you can’t stand it, this could be an indicator of a burn out.

  • You daydream and struggle to concentrate

We all have bad days at work. We’ve all wondered what it’s like to work in another industry (Like becoming an Astronaut or a dog walker, or both!).

Maybe you’ve thought about packing your things, and moving to a tropical island with your favourite animal (probably not Garfield because he will still hate Mondays).

It’s fun to daydream, but it’s always temporary and your mind snaps back to work.

Some clients and work tasks are a drag, and it can be hard to concentrate on mundane tasks.

However, when it becomes a frequent occurrence and you find most of your days are filled with struggles with concentration – this could be a sign of a burn out.

  • You have no energy for life after work

Are you finding that after a work day, you just want to be a couch potato? Do you struggle to make ‘fun plans’, have a social life, enjoy a hobby but can’t because you have no energy?

Your energy is your life source, and shouldn’t be entirely used on working. We are all humans, and not machines and therefore, we require balance.

In our current society, work is necessary to make money for life, so we do have to give some of our energy towards it.

However, if your work is sucking your life force, it could be an indicator of getting burnt out.

  • You live for the weekends

It’s Monday afternoon, and you’re already excited about seeing your friends on the weekend.

Sports, adventures and social life usually happens on the weekend – work is just something you have to “cope” with in order to enjoy life.

You dread what this week will be like, and the next, your future weeks seem grim. You’ve been feeling this way for some time and haven’t managed to snap out of it.

If you’re nodding your head in agreement right now – you could be burnt out.

  • Irritable and moody

Your pencil dropped on the floor… your coffee spilled onto your papers… your dog ate your lunch… Anything and everyone is making you irritable. You want to scream into the void.

When the small things that never used to bother you are making you feel very angry… Well, you know what I’m about to say! It could be a burn out.

The good news is that a lot of these feelings can be addressed. This is your body telling you that something needs to change for the better.

It could be that you need a break from work, less hours, or maybe it’s time for a career change. Only you can decide what’s best for your individual situation, and the fact that you are reading this article means you are taking positive steps in the right direction!

Work for a company? Consider talking to HR/Manager about lesser hours or giving you other tasks to work on temporarily. You might find a different position in the company that you enjoy much more.

Freelance workers may find it is a good time to take a week or two off, re-assessing clients (removing some that are contributing to your happiness the least) may be the ticket you need to get back to your usual self!

As always – if you are struggling with your mental health, please reach out to your local mental health services.

For Australians, I highly recommend Beyond Blue. I’ve used their services countless times and they have helped me through my very own work burn out stage.

Take care and stay safe,
