Twitter's New Business Profiles Get a Step Closer, with 'Convert to Professional' Option Now in Testing

Twitter's new business profiles look to be getting closer to a full launch, with a new 'Convert to Professional' option spotted in testing by app researchers.

The option was shared by both Jane Manchun Wong and Alessandro Paluzzi, two prolific app analysts, with the new, three-step process asking users to select a business category for their presence, and assign themselves as either a 'Business' or 'Creator' profile.

But the actual conversion doesn't work as yet. Once you've selected the last response, the screen just refreshes, and doesn't go any further - but the process likely indicates what users will eventually need to do to switch over to a professional presence.

Twitter first previewed its coming business profiles back in February, before launching a live test with selected users in April.

As explained by Twitter:

"Professional Profiles are a new tool that will allow businesses, non-profits, publishers, and creators - anyone who uses Twitter for work - to display specific information about their business directly on their profile. We’re starting with a small pool of businesses in the U.S. and will give more accounts access to Professional Profiles in the coming months."

Once you've made the switch, your profile will display additional contact info and options, as shown in this early preview.

In future, Twitter's Professional Profiles could also incorporate other options, like a product display panel or an image gallery - though it's also possible that these could end up being paid options, as part of Twitter's new push to boost revenue through add-on tools and features.

Twitter Professional profiles

Last month, Twitter launched 'Twitter Blue' in selected regions, its new offering which gives users access to a range of additional tweet features for a monthly fee. Maybe, Twitter will also look to charge a similar monthly rate for access to new business tools - which Twitter did allude to back last July, as part of a user survey on potential paid options.

Aside from 'Undo send' and the new, color options that are now available as part of Twitter Blue, Twitter also asked whether users might be willing to pay for business functions like brand surveys, auto replies, job ads and additional analytics elements. These are not, to be clear, part of its initial test of its pro profiles, but eventually, this could be where Twitter is headed, as it seeks to maximize its business potential, with a view to doubling its revenue by 2023.

As such, this could be the first step, with users able to convert their profile to a business, then, potentially, sign-up for more tools.

Would brands pay for these additional features? I mean, of course, it depends on exactly what Twitter might offer, but you can imagine that at least some businesses that are looking to maximize their presence would pay for extra features.

Either way, it looks like we'll soon find out. The new Professional Profile conversion option is not officially active, but it is looking pretty close to a final version.
