AutoX debuts Gen5, an L4 full self-driving system, becomes 1st Chinese company to do so

The company is also the first ever Chinese company to have acquired specific licenses from the California DMV to road test full self-driving cars.

AutoX, a well known Chinese self-driving technology company, launched “AutoX Gen5”, a system that achieved authentic full self-driving, with the specific focus of that system on RoboTaxi, or driverless-taxi. AutoX also claimed that Gen5 is the safest, most sensor-heavy system from a Chinese company, allowing it to compete head-to-head with leading self-driving companies around the world.

Detail: AutoX’s Gen5 is an integrated suite of hardware computer, sensors and software systems, allowing for cars installed with it to achieve full self-driving.

The system contains 28 automotive grade camera sensors generating images of more than 200 million pixels per frame around the car. It also boasts the highest definition mmWave radar in the industry, with an angular resolution as small as 0.9 degree. The company also claimed that the compute speed of the system in the backend reached 2200 tera operations per second, the highest among fellow Chinese-made self-driving systems.

Notable global semiconductor and AI companies, including Nvidia, Xilinx, Intel, OnSemi, etc., are among AutoX’s major partners for the development and launch of Gen5.

Context: AutoX Gen5 is launched on July 6 in Shanghai, where the World Artificial Intelligence Conference (WAIC), arguably the largest global conference dedicated to AI, is due in 2 days.

The approximate level of the AutoX Gen5's full self-driving capability is otherwise known in the industry as somewhere in between L4/L5, by the standards laid out by the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE). L4 generally means that the self-driving car can manage itself in all possible scenarios, including emergencies, without the presence of a safety driver (but a driver’s seat and necessary interface to control the car will still need to be present, per hardware requirements). L5 is basically L4 but with the driver interface completely stripped away, meaning that humans can only be passengers. An example of the L5 form factor is Waymo’s bug-like cars.

(AutoX's full self-driving capability is not to be confused with Tesla's FSD, the marketing jargon for its assisted driving system that is somewhere between L2/L3 by SAE's standard.)

In fact, AutoX is the only known Chinese company to have commited to full self-driving at L4 and above. The company acquired specific licenses from the California Department of Motor Vehicles to road test cars outfitted with fully self-driving systems last year, making it the second company, and first Chinese one, to have received that specific type of license.

Earlier this year, AutoX began providing robotaxi services to passengers in Shenzhen, Shanghai, Wuhan, and the Silicon Valley in the US, as well as serving as autonomous food delivery vehicles. The company is working with top carmakers around the world such as FCA, Hongda, BYD, etc., to implement necessary hardware and software into production model cars in preparation of a future of robotaxis.

AutoX was founded in 2016 by Xiao Jianxiong, a reputable computer vision and robotics scholar and former assistant professor at Princeton University. The company is funded by SAIC Motor, Dongfeng Motor, as well as ZhenFund, Alibaba, etc. The company has offices in both the US and China, and moved its headquarters from Silicon Valley to Shenzhen a few years ago.
