Your mic has been muted by your system settings – FIXED

I recently had a user repeatedly getting the error “your mic has been muted by your system settings” when trying to join or host a Google Meet on a Windows 10 device. External microphones, with both USB and 3.5mm audio connections, suffered the same issue.

After trying all the steps in my previous post, I was at a bit of a loss, until I found a new comment posted earlier today on a Google support forum in and amongst another 250 posts.

The Fix

It’s oddly simple, and doesn’t seem to make much sense – but it works!

  1. Click Start
  2. Go to settings
  3. Click System
  4. Click Sound
  5. Scroll to the bottom of the sound Windows and click Reset.
    Reset App Volume Device Preferences
All the settings were already set as default, and resetting them changed nothing but it still helped.
  6. Restart your browser and you should be good to go.
