Application Notice of Yuke Experimental Class for International Students (2021 Entry)

Set up in 2000, PKU Yuke strives to use our School’s excellent educational resources to train a cohort of outstanding global students. It provides one to two years of preparatory training for academically outstanding high-school graduates who wish to pursue an undergraduate degree at Peking University. On this milestone point that marks the 20th anniversary of Yuke, we set up an experimental class devoted to comprehensive education and provide students with professional language training, opportunities for international cultural communication, and smooth transition to “Double First-Class” undergraduate education, and various other resources. After accomplishing the study, students who pass the examination and meet the requirements will be admitted directly to undergraduate study at Peking University.

Experienced Teaching Staff & Specifically-Designed Teaching Material

Students will major in Chinese and minor in math, taught respectively by teachers from the School of Chinese as a Second Language and the School of Mathematical Sciences. Other courses and extracurricular activities will utilize the university’s excellent resources and offer students a diverse and high-quality study experience.

Teachers from the School of Chinese as a Second Language have high academic qualifications, of whom 65% have a Doctor degree, and almost all are equipped with teaching experience at overseas universities or Confucius Institutes, hence enabling them to understand the learning characteristics of international students studying Chinese thoroughly. The textbooks are the Boya series compiled and reviewed by teachers of the School and published by Peking University Press, which ensure a clear, systematic and scientific teaching objective.

Moreover, the School of Mathematical Sciences found an expert group to compile a set of textbooks specially designed for Yuke teaching, tailored for students’ needs and adaption to undergraduate study.

Undergraduate Experience & Liberal Education

Students of Yuke Experimental Class will have the chance to take courses together with undergraduates and experience university study in advance. At the beginning of each semester, several popular general education courses will be selected carefully, which students can choose to audit based on their interest. In addition to improving language capabilities, this can broaden students’ general knowledge, academic horizons and cultivate their ability to think and study independently.

Our education emphasizes both academic and practical ability. Various extracurricular activities and cultural trips will be conducted to help students integrate into the group and the university, to establish and build a harmonious Yuke family. There are also abundant recreational activities to help students balance work and rest.

【Application Criteria】

1．Applicants must be non-Chinese citizens；

2．Before admission, applicants must be between 17 and 23 years of age；

3．Applicants must have a full-time high school diploma.

* This does not include diplomas from ordinary Chinese high schools.

4．Applicants must be high-school graduates residing in Beijing currently or who can arrive in Beijing by August 1, 2021.

5．Applicants with Chinese heritage (at least one parent with previous or current Chinese nationality) should have obtained a foreign passport before April 30, 2017. By the time of admission, applicants should be more than 18 years of age.

【Curriculum】

Chinese Language Classes (20 class hours/week): These are compulsory classes. A Chinese language placement test will be conducted to identify students’ language capabilities and stream students for small group teaching. Each class will improve comprehensive language ability through listening, speaking, reading and writing training. Based on their interest and plan, students of Intermediate Chinese and Advanced Chinese classes can choose to study professional Chinese in linguistics, literature, law, economics, diplomacy, politics and other fields, allowing them to lay a solid foundation for future undergraduate study.

Mathematics Classes (4 class hours/week): These are elective classes. A math placement test will be conducted, and students will be streamed based on their Math level, Chinese level, and potential undergraduate major. Classes often comprise Basic Mathematics and Advanced Mathematics.

Lectures on Chinese Culture (2 class hours/week): These are elective classes. Lectures will concentrate on Chinese culture, economic development, history and geology, and various other themes to equip students with a comprehensive understanding of China.

【Study Plan and Undergraduate Majors】

A study plan will be customized based on each student’s level in Chinese language, mathematics, and potential undergraduate major.

【How to Apply】

1. Applications will be accepted from May 15 to June 30, 2021.

2. Fill in the form online: Applicants should log onto the PKU International Student Online Application System (http://www.studyatpku.com), complete the application form, submit and then print it.

3. Applicants should then submit the following paper application materials to the International Students Division via EMS express mail:

1) One application form. After online submission, the application form should be printed and signed, with a photo attached.

2) One high-school diploma, certificate of graduation or proof of imminent graduation (original). If the documents are neither in Chinese nor in English, then a notarized, official Chinese or English translation is required, verified by an official party, such as a government agency or a diplomatic mission.

3) One high-school grade transcript (original). If the grade transcript is neither in Chinese nor in English, then a notarized, official translation is required, verified by an official party, such as a government agency or a diplomatic mission.

4）One personal statement in Chinese or English. Please click here: personal statement for a template.

5）Two letters of recommendation (original). One letter must be from a teacher or class tutor at the applicant’s High School. For the second referee, there are no specific requirements for the job title.

6）One photocopy of the passport. The passport must have an expiration date beyond July 2022.

7）Application fee of 800 CNY (Please make the payment online in the application system. Unpaid applications will not be processed. The application fee is non-refundable, regardless of application result).

8）Optional materials: including but not restricted to photocopy of transcripts of SAT, IB, A-Levels, ACT, grade transcripts for any college entrance examination taken in the applicant’s home country, other certificates or awards, transcript of HSK, or any other proof of Chinese language proficiency that applicants believe may help their application.

* The hardcopy of application materials will only be accepted via China Post (EMS) mail, not via on-site submission.

* After reviewing the above materials, Peking University reserves the right to ask for other related materials, arrange interviews with applicants, or conduct any other assessment.

【Tuition fee】49,000 CNY/Year。

【Admission】Application results will be notified via email, and admission materials will be sent via mail by July 2021.

【Accommodation】

Peking University’s Zhongguanyuan Global Village

Room Rent: About 80 CNY/per person/per day.

【Scholarships】

After one year of Yuke study, if the student is admitted as an undergraduate, the student will have the opportunity to apply for Beijing Government Scholarship, Peking University Scholarship, etc.

【Medical insurance】

According to the Chinese Ministry of Education regulations, Yuke students should purchase international student comprehensive medical insurance on the mainland.

【Visa Information】

Admission materials will include the letter of admission and the JW202 visa application form. Students can apply for Residence Permit for Studying in China after registration.
