萨尔瓦多成为第一个将比特币归类为法币的国家。国会以 62/84 票批准了总统 Nayib Bukele 的提议。总统称政府创造了历史，此举将让该国的海外侨民更容易向国内寄钱。比特币将在 90 天内正式成为法币。新的法律意味着每一家企业都必须将比特币接受为购买商品或服务的法币，除非它无法提供用于完成交易所需的技术。萨尔瓦多严重依赖于海外侨民的汇款，这些汇款占到了 GDP 的20%。比特币的币值在 3.5 万美元左右，出于数个月来的低点。
