4 Designers I look Up to for Inspiration

Beautiful screens are fine; personal stories hit different

Most of us are always looking to learn new things, get new ideas, get better at our thinking process, and design things that inspire us. There isn’t a day that I don’t open Dribbble or Behance and find beautiful designs that aren’t less than “artwork.”

But recently, I was feeling low. I understood that it was too much of design porn, or call it inspiration porn. I could emphasize with the users I was targeting but wasn’t able to grow personally.

Then I came across real stories. Stories of amazing designers who made it big.

Here are 5 of them I absolutely admire.

1. Tobias van Schneider

’s Personal Website here.

He has worked with Spotify, NASA, Red Bull, Google, NASA, BMW, Wacom, Sony, Fantasy Interactive, Stinkdigital, Toyota, Ralph Lauren, and Bwin, to name a few.

As from his personal website

He started his career by dropping out of high school at 15 with grand plans of becoming a software engineer. After realizing he, quite frankly, sucked at it, Tobias began teaching himself design at the age of 16. Fast forward a few years and he is now a designer, founder, speaker, mentor and maker.

I’m a software engineer by degree, and I’m terrible at it. This story inspires me to learn more and more by myself.

Oh, and yes, brownie points for his beard. :P

2. Daniel Burka

’s Personal Website here
This website is beautiful!

He is a product designer and manager who has been a design partner at Google’s Ventures.

The best part about him that inspires me the most is that he worked with a not-for-profit based in Peru, helping Latin American women build successful careers in tech. He also designs for social good at nonprofits. I don’t see a lot of people doing that.

His design agency has been around for more than 21 years now and is called silverorange. They’ve worked with the Firefox project and Mozilla back from the 1999s when Daniel entered his 20s.

They’ve worked with huge companies like Duolingo after that.

3. Sarah Doody

Sarah’s Personal Website Here

Sarah is the founder of “The UX portfolio formula,” where she helps designers get their dream roles.

You will never create a product that’s usable and useful without understanding the underlying context behind what you’re creating.

-Sarah Broody

I personally loved her articles that resonated well with my thought process.

She’s written on:

I hope I could’ve found this out before getting into no-code

One more thing that inspires me about her is that she asks the right questions. You can watch any of her talks or even look at the resources on her website. There is enough emphasis given to the right questions as UX researchers.

4. Helen Tran

Helen’s personal website here. She is widely known for her product design work at Shopify, where she worked for 12 years and the team scaled from 300 to 3000+ employees during the time.

Mad respects her for doing a full-time job while she was teaching design just to accelerate her career.

She’s currently building Jupiter, which is software for personal care professions.

Do you feel naturally inclined to people who’re not just designers but full-fledged makers?
