在宇宙中绝大部分物质是看不见的，暗物质占到了宇宙物质的 85%。暗物质不与电磁力发生作用，它的存在主要是通过引力效应得知，对其进行测量非常困难，它存在的确凿证据也很难得到。加州河滨分校的理论物理学家在《Journal of High Energy Physics》发表论文（预印本），认为暗物质可以通过额外维进行解释。我们所熟悉的空间有三个维度，物理学家认为额外的第四个维度可以解释为什么暗物质隐藏的如此之深，他们认为暗力（dark forces）控制了暗物质粒子的相互作用。额外维通常是描述共形场论的数学技巧，但他们没有使用共形场论，而是利用了全息额外维理论。
