Tesla sold 33,463 Chinese-made electric vehicles in May, including exports, a 29% increase from April, according to data from the China Passenger Car Association (CPCA) on Tuesday.

Details: CPCA said that sales of new electric vehicles in May reached 185,000 units, a year-on-year increase of 177.2% and a month-on-month increase of 17.4%. However, the overall sales of passenger vehicles only increased by 1.1% to 1.66 million units.

In May, China exported 107,000 vehicles, an increase of 250% year-on-year. EVs accounted for 14% of total exports, of which Tesla contributed 11,527 vehicles.

In April, Tesla sold 25,845 China-made cars, down from 35,478 in March.

CPCA said it expects China to sell 2.4 million electric, plug-in hybrid and hydrogen fuel cell passenger vehicles this year.

Context: Tesla is facing scrutiny in China over its handling of customer complaints regarding quality issues. In response, the US EV maker is trying to boost its engagement with regulators and is beefing up its government relations team, Reuters reported, citing sources familiar with the matter.

The company has set up a data center in China to store data locally and plans to open a data platform for customers.
