Watch live: Networking automation on the menu for Cisco’s Future Cloud event, June 2

Major companies do not go through the trouble of developing new products without some measure of confidence that customers want them.

In this regard, the flurry of announcements rolled out by Cisco Systems Inc. at its Cisco Live event in March offered an instructive look at the future expected for enterprise-grade computing networks. Cisco’s latest offerings reflected a continued shift to hybrid cloud environments, with a focus on technologies for the edge and simplifying sprawling networks so that users can connect with applications seamlessly.

“We go hybrid so we can go multicloud,” said Daniel Newman, principal analyst at Futurum Research, in an interview with SiliconANGLE. “The edge is another variable; these are all just destinations for compute, storage and networking. The key is you don’t want to have to treat each environment differently; you don’t want every one of those workloads to be on an island.”

Cloud providers, integrators, ecosystem technology partners and industry analysts will discuss what tomorrow’s cloud will be and what organizations need to know to prepare during the  “Future Cloud: One event, a world of opportunities” event on June 2.

Speakers from Cisco will include DD Dasgupta, vice president, product management of cloud and compute; James Mobley, senior VP and general manager of the Network Services Business Unit; Kaustubh Das, SVP and GM of cloud and compute; and Scott Harrell, SVP and GM of the Intent Based Networking Group. Infrastructure as code

Keeping workloads from being isolated is an ongoing challenge as use of applications expands to run the business. For a networking giant such as Cisco, the solution is in making the hardware experience as cloudlike as possible.

An important element for Cisco’s strategy is infrastructure as code, highlighted by company executives during the March event as key to networking automation. Cisco’s move to software-defined networking principles is designed to enable DevOps to automatically deploy infrastructure and accelerate the pace of business.

Cisco recently announced the bundling of two SaaS platforms – Terraform and Intersight – to facilitate use of infrastructure as code in the private cloud. Connecting the two platforms reflects a new reality where cloud developers create and remove infrastructure in the process of deploying the application code they need.

“Ultimately, everybody is moving toward an app development platform,” Newman said. “How do you keep them on their hardware but give them an experience they are looking for, which is more cloud than on-prem? The market wants a cloud experience for more workloads.”
