一名男子戴着类似 VR 头显的设备，伸出右手将手指放在一个黑色笔记本上。虽然动作简单，但却具有非常重要的意义，因为他已经失明近四十年了。科学家在《Nature Medicine》期刊上报告了光遗传学疗法首次让失明者重见光明。作为临床试验的一部分，这名男子的眼睛植入了基因，使视网膜神经元产生常见于绿藻的光感蛋白。他所佩戴的设备将周围的图像作为脉冲光束投射到光感细胞上，神经元会将光信号传入大脑视觉处理中心。基因改造过的神经元替代了他因为视网膜色素变性这一遗传疾病而失去的感光受体。这名男子还无法看到颜色或更多细节，但展现了光遗传学疗法成功恢复了部分视力。
