More battles, more options, more historical match-ups

Sargent cavalry flank charges that roll an entire line. Norman crossbowmen taking down whole units with volley after volley of fire. Determined Italian peasants taking down a noble on horseback. Valiant Byzantine generals lying down their life in the middle of an enemy cluster. These are just some of the things players will experience when playing Field of Glory II: Medieval – Reconquista.

This is the first downloadable content pack developed by Byzantine Games and published by Slitherine for Field of Glory II: Medieval. As the name shows the DLC is built around the south of Europe and the battles fought by Christian rulers to take back the Iberian peninsula from Islamic polities.

The game now offers more factional armies to choose from, with Italian and North African ones joining those mentioned above. Gamers can try to match or exceed the achievements of El Cid or Muhammad II of Granada in Spain or those of Frederick II in northern Italy and the various Normans rulers who tried to conquer the South.

Reconquista also features 8 big historical battles and all the new armies can be selected in the sandbox campaign, pitting them against any other featured faction.

That’s a lot of content to explore and it all fits well with the core ideas of Field of Glory II. Battles are exciting thanks to the die rolls but tactical acumen is required for victory. A few of the engagements do take a little too long to resolve but, otherwise, the game offers a solid set of mechanics that deliver great engagements.

The units and battlefields featured in Field of Glory II: Medieval – Reconquista look as good as those in the base game. It’s still easy to read a situation quickly and then hover the mouse to get even more details before deciding on how to act. The sound design remains solid.

Conclusion

Reconquista is a very good piece of initial downloadable content for Field of Glory II: Medieval and a clear Yay for anyone who has enjoyed what the core game has to offer. The new factions have more unit variety and play differently from those in the base game. And the game offers so many potential match-ups and what-ifs that it will keep history buffs occupied for a long time.

The development team will probably continue to expand the featured factions and I suspect that the focus will next move to Eastern Europe. But I would like to see Field of Glory II: Medieval get a little more in the way of campaign mechanics, small additions to make the space between the battles feel more meaningful.
