Does it get you promoted? Probably not. Is it a sign of true leadership? Absolutely.

If your management is any good, you will be judged on how your team does. I always filled in whatever needed to be done. Tended to be both the most boring and the most interesting stuff, not much in the middle.
Yep it’s about putting what the team needs in front of your own needs.

I agree with this totally! I think it’s also likely to aid with promotion as well if you get good at making your work visible at the right levels

Love this point. I often seek out and take on the worst and most boring work. It gains a lot of goodwill with an engineering team and can sometimes be simplified and streamlined possibly handed off to someone else once it’s not a mess.
As a team lead, I often picked up escalated customer issues to keep the disruption away from the rest of the team.
That wouldn't always be the right thing to do, but at the time it was the best contribution I could make to us building up some momentum.
