马达加斯加的法语
在马达加斯加，当官僚机构的工作人员想要强横地发布命令时，通常都是用法语。而马达加斯加本地语被认为是更适合于审议、解释、和用来在制定政策时用来讨论而达成共识的语言。David Graeber 和当地的一名官员，一直用马达加斯加语交谈，官员甚至不知道他懂法语。一次 David 路过官员的办公室，正好所有人都打算提早下班溜回家。
「办公室关门了，」官员用法语说，「有事的话，明早 8 点再来。」
David 假装困惑，用马达加斯加语声称他不懂法语。官员看上去完全不知道怎么把这句话翻译成本地语，而只是用法语一遍又一遍的重复这句话。其他人后来证实了 David 的怀疑：如果切换到马达加斯加语，那么官员觉得自己必须要解释为什么办公室在这个时间提早关门。法语在马达加斯加被称为「指挥语言」，用法语说的命令不需要进行解释、审议和最终同意，因为它们归根结底是以暴力威胁为前提的。
