5 Web Publications That Pay You to Write About UX Design

Even if you are a junior designer and have no writing experience

If someone would’ve told me one year ago I would be making an extra income by writing UX Design articles, I wouldn’t believe it. I was still a junior engineer, I had no freelancer experience and I was not a native English speaker: every odd was against me.

However, right after I started it, so many doors opened. I was surprised by how many online publications were interested in technical writing pieces and were willing to help new writers.

My main motivation to start writing was not the money at first, because I had a steady full-time job. I was looking for a way to start establishing my personal brand, contribute to the tech community and add something to stand out on my resumé. But once I discovered publications willing to pay up hundreds of dollars for my writing pieces, I would be lying if I said the payment didn’t become a great motivation to keep going.

If you also would like to start side-hustling as a freelance writer in the UX niche, here goes a list of 5 websites that encourage you to submit your words:

Smashing Magazine

If you always wanted to write about Web Design but you feel insecure about it, Smashing Magazine is the perfect place to publish your first piece.

Our authors range from experienced writers to first-timers. As our process includes editorial oversight, we can be a great place to publish your first piece. (…) we can give you any help that you need as you write and revise your article. Experienced writers all started somewhere, we would be honored for you to start your writing career with us.” —Vitaly Friedman, Smashing Magazine’s Editor-in-Chief

They are interested in tutorials, opinion pieces, long and detailed guides, and case studies that cover everything about Web Design and Development.

SitePoint

SitePoint is a website and book publisher in the tech niche. They maintain a reference website with reliable technical content, to which they regularly accept new writers.

“If there’s a voice of self-doubt stopping you from submitting a pitch, please ignore it — I guarantee we’ve published work from people with less experience than you on a subject you’re passionate about, and in my experience, that voice is a pretty good sign you’ve thought things through more than the people who will pitch regardless.” — Joel Falconer, SitePoint’s managing editor

According to their website, they are currently looking for content about design software (Figma, Adobe XD, Sketch, and InVision), variable fonts, and new forms of the application of design standards. They also accept more broad topics, like pieces about knowledge application and productivity, the future of the web, and the current tech industry.

A List Apart

A List Apart is a web repository of design, development, content, and everything in between. They cover UX topics including Accessibility, Information Architecture, Interaction Design, Usability, and User Research.

“We’re always looking for new authors. If you’ve got an idea that will challenge our readers and move our industry forward, we want to hear about it. But you don’t need to wait for an idea that will redefine web design. Just aim to bring readers a fresh perspective on a topic that’s keeping you up at night.” — A list Apart

After you submit a pitch for an article between 600–2500 words, you’ll work closely with an editor to review your draft and work on it until it’s ready to be published. If you enjoy writing, it is a great opportunity to receive professional feedback and learn how to craft a strong piece.
