How UI/UX Designers can Make (more!) Money in 2021
5 Websites +1 Special Resource for Female Designers!
Many of us designers try to find gigs/jobs on Upwork and similar websites, only to find out that they are SATURATED. When I started with Fiverr, I couldn’t find a single gig for 28 days straight.
Not that I found one after that, I just haven’t had a look :P
I knew that I’ll need to find other ways of searching for jobs/gigs and making money online. I found out a few newer platforms that are different from the generic ones and have smaller & closer communities. Now we have a better chance of getting gigs and money from these platforms.
Contra
Contra describes itself as :
“Contra is a new professional network that allows anyone to work for themselves. We provide the tools and infrastructure needed to successfully work the way you want with zero commission fees.”
- You can have a detailed view of who’s viewing your profile from which country.
- They don’t charge any commission from payments.
- You can send and receive invoices on Contra itself.
- Having fewer people on the site will help you stand out from the crowd.
Angel List
You can also consider starting your design career at startups. they are a great place to learn, ship, and take ownership of whatever you design.
Angel list is one such website that has a lot of startups post various jobs in many different domains. You can find companies like Twitch, Uber, and Discord over here as well!
Girl Boss
This platform is specifically targeted towards women.
They also have job listings only for the ladies! So you have a better chance of getting selected for that position. I really think this is a great initiative to empower women across various work profiles like sales, design, marketing, etc.
Plus point, they also have a community!
Credo
Get Credo is a website where you find gigs for various different freelance jobs. Everything from SEO, Digital Marketing, Design, and Advertising is listed over here.
99 Designs
99 Designs is a website that conducts Design-a-thons ( much like hackathons for design ). You can also work directly with someone by getting in touch with them.
These designathons are like competitions where you upload your entry for the specific requirement and the best one wins. You can also check out the rest of the entries by different designers around the globe and get to learn. A lot.
I’ve personally learned a lot from people who’ve been performing and winning in these competitions.
Ping Pong
Funny name right?
You can use your UX Designs skills to test other companies’ websites and apps and give them feedback, and they pay you in return!
You can be part of Usability Tests, Design Sprints, Expert Interviews, Concept Testing, and a lot more.
You can get paid anywhere between 10–100 Euros for doing the specific tests.
Behance Jobs:
Behance, as you might be knowing is a great place to host your design portfolio. But they also offer job listings. They have also added various interesting filtering options that can help you find an internship/job as per your conditional requirement.
You can now filter the Country, the type of job — Full time, Freelance, Internship, and the creative field you have your expertise in.
Ghost:
If you have a newsletter, YouTube channel, Instagram Fan Following, or even a bunch of friends that follow you on Medium, ghost is for you. You can build a community where you can sell your content.
Get Revenue
This is a paid newsletter service offered by Twitter, which helps you convert your loyal audience into paying customers. You can surely check it out.
