PacketLight CEO Koby Reshef explains the company, its tech and the future: VIDEO INTERVIEW

By Alex Zaharov-Reutt

VIDEO INTERVIEW: Mr McGuire might have advised graduate Dustin Hoffman to get into plastics back in the 1960s, but it's a good thing PacketLight's founders decided that fiber optical transport solutions were the ideal way to deliver our fantastically elastic present and an even more amazing future still before us.

With the future being ever more data centric, requirements have rocketed for ever-greater storage and ever-faster ways of accessing and transferring that data.

This is where PacketLight Networks has excelled for over two decades. The company offers a suite of leading 1U metro and long haul Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing (DWDM) and Optical Transport Network (OTN) devices, as well as Layer-1 optical encryption for transport of data, storage, voice and video applications over dark fibre and WDM networks.

However, you won’t find its equipment in your home broadband Wi-Fi router.

PackletLight’s customers are data centres, broadcast media companies, carriers, utilities, dark fibre providers, content service providers, research and education campuses, government, and other enterprises.

What this means is that PacketLight delivers the entire optical layer transport solution its customers need to handle and transport data in huge quantities and at superfast speeds, with maximum security and no disruption.

This is done within a highly integrated compact platform, designed for maximum flexibility, easy maintenance and operation, with real pay-as-you-grow architecture, while maintaining a high level of reliability and low cost – all vital considerations for the customers that use PacketLight’s technologies in their platforms to truly operate at scale.

A leader in its field, PacketLight has remained at the cutting edge of technology for more than 20 years in a very competitive industry.

So, to find out more about the company's past, present and future, iTWire's Alex Zaharov-Reutt spoke with Koby Reshef, CEO of PacketLight Networks.

Koby is extensively experienced in both the technical and marketing aspects of the fiber optics industry, and judging by his bio and after speaking with him, Koby clearly knows his stuff!

It was a delight to speak with and learn from him, and I'm sure you'll feel the same way too after watching or hearing our conversation.

My video interview with Koby is embedded immediately below, followed by a summary of the topics we discussed, after which the official PacketLight Networks company intro video from YouTube is embedded, so please read on!

  • I started by introducing Koby and welcoming him to the program, and asking him to describe PacketLight Networks to us today in 2021.
  • We spoke about the impact COVID 19 has had on the company, and given that PacketLight's customers are carriers, utilities, dark fibre providers, content service providers, data centres, research and education campuses, and enterprises, we learned about the digital acceleration that COVID caused, seeing an increase in demand for PacketLight's products and services.
  • I recalled that Telstra's InfraCo division announced recently that it is lighting up some of its dark fibre network, with the company owning 250,000 kms of fibre optic cables across Australia, and his thoughts on that and similar moves worldwide.
  • Koby shared what encouraged PacketLight's founders to start the company back in 2000, which was clearly a visionary move, and what the company's first product was when it started.
  • I asked what PacketLight's most in-demand product is today, and how much more data can be sent over fibre optics given the advances that have already been made, and what the future might hold.
  • We spoke about customers that Koby wanted to highlight as success stories, and while no specific customers where named, he was able to share some interesting information.
  • I then asked Koby about his history in the world of tech, more on the future, great advice Koby has received in life, and his final message to viewers and readers, and to PacketLight's current and future customers and partners.

I definitely commend the video to you to watch and enjoy!
