The F-35 is the most expensive weapon ever made. One just shot itself and did at least $2.5 million in damage.

The Lede

Earlier this month, the F-35B Joint Strike Fighter was flying over Arizona when an externally mounted gatling gun discharged and exploded. The pilot safely landed the jet with no injury to any personnel, but the incident was classified as Class A, the most severe kind of accident.

Key Details

  • The gatling gun mounted to the jet fires a 25mm armor-piercing high-explosive round. The explosion damaged the underside of the jet.
  • Class A accidents denote one of the following: death to a person involved with the aircraft or weapon, total destruction of the jet or damage costing $2.5 million or more.
  • Lockheed Martin began manufacturing the F-35 in 2006, and there have been issues from the start. An engine flaw that causes fuel leaks has led multiple jets to randomly catch fire.
