Google removes Parler from the Play Store while Apple gives 24 hours to improve moderation

In wake of the Capitol attacks, social media giants have taken steps to ensure a smooth transition of power on 20th January. Now, Google has decided to remove Parler, an alternative to Twitter that touts itself as the "free speech social network", from its Play Store.

Google's decision came a day after the attack as the tech giant sent a notice to Parler after removing the app from the Play Store. The company noted that Parler will be suspended from the Play Store until it can come up with a moderation plan to address "this ongoing and urgent public safety threat." A Google spokesperson told The Wall Street Journal that the company took down Parler because of the “continued posting in the Parler app that seeks to incite ongoing violence in the U.S.”

According to BuzzFeed News, Apple has sent a notice to Parler giving them 24 hours to come up with a moderation plan. The Cupertino giant noted that it has "received numerous complaints regarding objectionable content in your Parler service, accusations that the Parler app was used to plan, coordinate, and facilitate the illegal activities in Washington D.C. on January 6, 2021 that led (among other things) to loss of life, numerous injuries, and the destruction of property.” Apple further added that Parler needs to submit an update and a "moderation improvement plan within 24 hours of the date of the message” which was sent on Friday morning.

Parler's CEO John Matze shared the following statement on the social media platform:

"We will not cave to pressure from anti-competitive actors! We will and always have enforced our rules against violence and illegal activity. But we WONT (sic) cave to politically motivated companies and those authoritarians who hate free speech!"

“Anyone who buys an Apple phone is apparently a user. Apperently (sic) they know what is best for you by telling you which apps you may and may not use.”

In case you don't know, Parler was launched in 2018 as a free speech social media platform and it gained popularity after Twitter and Facebook started suspending accounts for violating their rules. In the past couple of years, Parler has become a safe haven for right-wing activists, conspiracy theorists, and QAnon supporters. Recently, users on Parler called for the execution of Vice President Mike Pence for certifying votes and letting President-elect Joe Biden take over.

After Wednesday's attack, various social media platforms including Facebook, Twitter, and Twitch temporarily suspended President Donald Trump's account. Earlier today, Twitter decided to permanently ban Trump from the micro-blogging website.

Google already pulled the app without any warning.

The thing about Section 230 is that it only gives immunity from liability if users post liable content, like child porn and things that can result in civil suits, that the content provider is unaware of. As soon as notification begins, they lose that liability protection.

So this is the content providers (Google Play, App Store) telling the Parler app that they’ve been informed there is liable content on Parler and that Parler needs to start removing said liable content immediately.

Ugh, why don’t people realize Section 230 was designed to prevent against a service’s liability for the content posted by outright malicious users?!

Welcome to 1984.

See the thing is, Parler still removes content it deems unfit. It's not free for all. In fact, Parler's terms specify you can't make violent threats etc. And you people don't care. You only care when it's your side that's affected.

Is Parler anti free speech for not allowing illegal content on that website?

Exactly, if a person actually looked at the Parler app for 5 minutes they would see that. But the media just has to put the word Trump in the same sentence with a thing and people start saying the thing is bad.

They should have removed Twitter actually when ###### hit the fan.

Twitter is used for a lot of good things...

Same could be said for any social media platform. Infact, it was the core purpose of the social media, connect with people and post good things, and here we are. Twitter is still one of the most polluted platform, they suspend your account for writing some words for common things but the accounts used to promote terrorism are still there. The point is, this is not a right call by google citing the reasons.

They should have removed Twitter actually when ###### hit the fan.

Twitter is used for a lot of good things...

For every good thing twitter is used for there are 10 bad things it is used for. Twitter is the sewer of the Internet. I am so glad I have NEVER had an account.

Before Trump started using it back in 2016 Twitter tried to sell the company. Facebook, Google, Microsoft even Disney all passed on it because it was so toxic. It was predicted they would run out of money because of their burn rate. Then Trump used to get around the media and Twitter's value went way up. I just heard yesterday that something like 40% of Twitter traffic went away by banning Trump. Oh the irony.

Twitter is pure trash and they let all kinds of horrible stuff on that site, including straight up terrorism. The fact that Apple allows the Twitter app and wants to block this other app, that I have never heard of, because conservatives use it, stinks really, really bad.

Any and all talks of government regulation against big tech should absolutely include Apple.

This is comedy gold.

Can today get any more funnier. 🤣

I can't believe they waited this long to try and quash it.

Just use WeChat. Google and Apple have no balls to remove WeChat.

The alt is Trump could just grow up and stop acting like a child. Hence why is toys were taken away from him.

Just use WeChat. Google and Apple have no balls to remove WeChat.

If Trump supporters used it, they would probably remove that tool.

Is WeChat not Chinese?

Are you suggesting the Trump supporters use a Chinese app after attacking China for the past four years?

Just use WeChat. Google and Apple have no balls to remove WeChat.

If Trump supporters used it, they would probably remove that tool.

Not if those Trump supporters stopped calling for a violent uprising and calling for individual people to be murdered.

You far right crowd always play the victim. Stop acting like violent extremists on these apps and you won't get banned and if the apps themselves moderate appropriately they won't be removed.

It's not rocket science.

Twitter and Facebook were used by BLM and ANTIFA during the 5 months of riots, to kill 26 people, loot, burn, destroy hundreds of businesses, beat up dozens of store owners, kill or wound 11 cops. Yet Apple and Google still allow both of those apps.

Another article I read quoted the owner of this Parler app saying the Trump rally riots were not organize using this app but Facebook was because this app has no way to organize events.

Nice whataboutism there.

This is great. Maybe US based ISPs will block that site too. There's precedent of course. The US has been banning piracy websites forever.

While we are at it let's just create the "Great USA Firewall" that way they can block whatever they want.

Trump still has a path to victory, he will use 5G to get Mark Zuckerberg to overturn the election. Wake up sheeple!!!

I agree 100%. but those corrupt leftist major social media platforms are just abusing their power to censor viewpoints they don't agree with under the guise of other BS. the major social media platforms are basically getting more and more authoritarian, especially very recently. people will naturally rebel against that crap. the left is in a rush towards communism basically and many are blind and don't see it.

p.s. hell, they censored a recent Rudy Giuliani video to he posted hours ago now named... 'What really happened on January 6th?'.

You’ve been brainwashed.

This is why I like using Android phones, we can still install the apps without the need for the google play store. The store is mostly only great for keeping the apps up to date.

Another day, another shame. Even the dictatorships will have more freedom of speech than the US soon. Welcome to the new America, where only leftists are able to speak and other half of the people are silenced.

That is what is happening here, people are finding their own platforms to express the opinions on that are being censured, only the current companies don't like it and are trying to suppress these other platforms that they are being replaced by!

Private or not its got a long reach not just in the US but other countries just as others do. There was a reason the Bells were broken up in the 80s because they were too big. Well these companies are HUGE compared to that and have a longer reach that can effect, topple governments if they want to. This is no longer a free speech thing this is big problem. As citizens of any country you can't allow these corps to have this kinda control.

It’s never been a free speech thing. It’s a problem with people understanding how things work. Google and Apple have rules to use their services and you are not protected. It has nothing to do with the country.

Example: why can’t I publish a pornographic app to those services? Answer: it’s against their rules.

And again you are missing the big picture - these services are so big from such large companies they can topple a govt or turn the tide of an election by restricting or pushing what they see fit. This is where the issue is - it has nothing to do with common service rules and usages by any one person.

Fully agree.

People use Twitter, Facebook, YouTube, Google, CNN, and MSNBC to determine who they vote for.

These are private businesses that have the full right to determine the election results by controlling the discussion.

If you require social media for your own way, well that’s the problem.

Anyway, “find their own way” was in reference to the companies not following the rules of private companies. You either abide or you won’t be using it and therefore have to deal with the distribution problem themselves.

You do understand that you can not only still get the app without apple/google but the site itself is still accessible. On top of that, even if you are on parler, you still have to agree to their rules meaning you can still be banned by breaking their rules.

Parler is already moderated, you can say whatever is permitted by the first amendement. When you flag a post, the moderators act quickly.

The fact is they ban people there as well, it's no different and those who think it is are dreaming.

Considering the First Amendment covers government suppression of speech and not private parties, that means anything can be said.

until today i never knew that such a twitter alternative existed, what a good way to promote it by banning it.

1. If you didn't know about other options to twitter, that's on you not anyone else. Shockingly you can still "google" alts to twitter for an answer.

2. They aren't promoting it by banning the app

3. Parler can still provide the app outside of using apple/google

Private companies like Facebook, Twitter and also Neowin have Terms of Service, and you AGREE to them before signing up.
If you break the rules as stated in these terms, you can get banned. It's like that on any forum, website etc. run by a company. Break the rules, and you get punished for it.

A lot of people these days seem to have a very warped image of what 'free speech' actually is, and start shouting 'dictatorship' and 'censoring' without really thinking.
In the EU there's a lot of stuff that can be said freely , but there's also stuff that you say will get you into legal trouble really quickly.

Free speech, like anything else, has it's limitations before it becomes something more sinister.
It's sad that due to social media people have been living in bubbles for quite some time now, amplifying their own 'believes' with other in the same bubble. Some of the responses above show that.
We need some kind of reform on anything 'social media' to get out of this problem, but I don't keep my hopes up for now.

Not a US citizen or a Trump supporter.

My question is, Section 230 provides immunity to Parler from moderating its users. It can choose to do, but also choose not to as well. So, Parler is under no obligation to moderate its users or content. OTOH, yes, Play Store and App Store can decide what app stays on their platform based on their terms. However, it is not just Parler that harbors information detrimental to the society. Facebook, Twitter, WhatsApp, Telegram and countless other apps also have illegal, hateful and outright dangerous content, if one looks deep enough. Why hasn't Apple or Google removed those apps?

I am not saying Apple/Google should follow the 'all or nothing' approach. It might even sound like plain old whataboutism, but these other apps have a history behind them and continue to harbor dangerous content, yet remain available in the Stores. Parler is quite new compared to the other apps. Let Apple/Google remove this app, but shouldn't others also be on the line?

Will Apple or Google take the same step to remove the app if these people start gathering in WhatsApp or Telegram or Signal or some other famous app?

Removing Parler form the Stores is a bit odd, as it is in the same line as FB and/or Twitter. A Social Media app. Not sure what happened before, to start these actions.

Apple is striking down on privacy stuff lately, hence the FB outcry of late. But that has to do with other stuff.
It seems they don't want to make Parler the new 'Trump' platform, and throw everybody under the bus by doing so....

A bunch of people: LOL, conservatives! Facebook and Twitter can block who they want, they are private companies; this is not preventing your free speech!

Same exact people: yeah, it's great that someone wants to ban Parler (a product of another private company, with users who accepted their terms of service and with it's own moderation practices)!

🤷‍♂️ Welcome to 2020, Season two.

Am I hearing this right? Conservatives are complaining about companies banning their right to commit sedition publicly online. How ######ed up is that?

The problem is, the companies are choosing what is sedition or not. Because they allow alot of sedition to take place on the sites when it's coming from the left.

These companies shouldn't be forced to participate in making a sedition cake and if you want to force them, then that is socialism.

We need to have a domestic terrorism law in this country, so the gov't can watch these sites.

I truly don't understand the "need" for "domestic terrorism" laws. Do laws not already exist for, public nuisance, inciting riots, rioting, willful destruction of property, arson, intention to commit harm up to murder, various harm to murder laws.... I assume not, since seemingly people (including MSM and lawmakers) weren't charged for over 100 days of it mid-year... glad I live in a quiet (and not a mostly peaceful) part of the world

I never used Parler, so I have a doubt: what's stopping people from going to the Parler website through a mobile browser and access the content from there?

Absolutely nothing. Not a single thing. Also some QAnon losers, racists, and white supremacists on Reddit were concerned at this PWA alternative because it has the word “Progressive” in it.

he lives up to it a lot, sad thing is, he doesn't understand what he's actually mad about.

We unfortunately have clueless boomers running our nation. The main way we get to know who to vote for is from Twitter, Facebook, YouTube and the like. Services that have the full ability to set terms that benefit them in the election process.

Maybe for simpletons. The very same people who relied on sleaze tabloids before the Internet.

Don't much care. I dont use Twitter or Parlor and think services like this are a crap way to inform people of what is going on. Lots of people are lazy and look to social media to decide on who to follow, vote for, or believe in a lot of cases. This is their sole news source. Whoever is trending, or popular/most liked posts. Shows how weak minded some can be to take what social media says and run with it without actually looking in to it further.

Anyway, I wonder how long it will take Twitter to ban other hate mongers, like Farrakhan, from their platform as well. His comments towards Jews are appalling to say the least and has posted a lot of hate on Twitter before. And there are other accounts on Twitter calling for attacks against the US, and others, that appear to be still there.

Have a friend on FB that I am about to block due to the fact that everyday she spews crap about the elections and conspiracy crap as well. Also, getting in to arguments with people that have done nothing but help her in the past. She has gone over the deep end and social media has skewed her mind.

Less politics more technology, like perhaps new twitter settings themes etc... not the content.

haha...Amazon is booting Parler.

Good. Parler was allowing messages calling for criminal actions against innocent people. They refused to properly moderate their users in some twisted form of 'free speech' that has no basis in law or the constitution.

Amazon has NO obligation to host that. ZERO. None. Zilch. It's absolutely ridiculous that anyone would think they would be required to host this and that somehow taking action on this is wrong.
