The Nest Cam IQ Outdoor is no longer available to buy, Google has confirmed to 9to5Google, after the site noticed that the camera was out of stock in most countries around the world. The company says, however, that “Nest will keep investing in new innovations” including a “new lineup of security cameras for 2021.”

For now, Google still sells the $129 Nest Cam Indoor, the $299 Next Cam IQ Indoor, and the $199 Nest Cam Outdoor. The IQ models have upgraded video quality and AI-based features like face and pet recognition. Google says it will continue to support its existing Nest cameras with new features and security updates. None of the current hardware is newer than 2017, though, so an upgrade is probably overdue.

Google didn’t provide any details on what the new Nest Cam lineup will actually include, nor when it will arrive, but it’s not necessarily surprising to see the company get ahead of the announcement. The Pixel 4A 5G and Pixel 5 were revealed months ahead of their actual shipping date, while Google tweeted out an early picture of the Pixel 4 the year before in an attempt to pre-empt inevitable leaks.

Google also appears to be working on a new Nest Hub with Soli radar gesture support, as indicated by a recent FCC filing.

Nest line is great. Every single product I’ve ever bought (since the "DropCam days") are still working like a charm and all integrate together.
- 3 camaras (including DropCam so shows the age)
- 1 Hello bell (bought when came out)
- 4 Protect smoke detectors (at least 5 years old)
- 2 Thermostats (oldest at least 7 years old)
- 4 speakers of different kinds (oldest one is the original GH)
- WiFi mesh with 4 pucks (bought when came out)
Have never replaced or thrown away a single piece of hardware.

Also all work with Google Home app except Protect but it’s coming (in Beta now). I don’t even use the old Nest app anymore.

Anecdotally, I have a Nest Cam and a Hello. The Cam has had a non-functioning speaker since about a week after the warranty ran out and the plastic on the front of the Hello is cracking and chipping off. I also have two thermostats (v3) and one has the little plastic piece on the chin of the display starting to come off. On the flip side I have purchased a number of Wyze cams over the years simply because they were cheap, but they all still work perfectly despite being orders of magnitude cheaper than the Nest products.

I still use the Nest primarily because the Nest app is head and shoulders above others that I’ve used, or at least it was when I made the considerable investment in the hardware.

Same, my house is flooded with Nest products and everything works seamlessly. Never had any issues aside from the random outage here and there but that happens with every service and so infrequently that it doesn’t bother me much. They usually prorate fees if there is an outage also.

Always felt more comfortable with Google and their quality & security compared to Amazon/Ring.

Although, one thing I liked about Ring is their plethora of integrated products. Their portfolio is much larger than Nest. Would like to see Nest come out with more products that integrate nicely with each other.

I have google products but a ring doorbell. I really wish google made a battery operated doorbell. I might end up switching to arlos new battery operated doorbell so that I can integrate it with the rest of my google stuff.

It’s really not a huge deal to run a wire. I understand that it’s not as easy as just screwing in a button but IMO I’d rather Google focus on something else, they surely have room for improvements. Wired solutions are more "professional" and "worry free" so to speak. Connect it and forget it

So you got here first and just felt like you had to post something?

Posted  on Jan 6, 2021 | 8:50 AM

Ditto. We’ve got a Nest Camera, Nest hubs and minis and never had problems with any of them. I find the Home app easy to use and haven’t used the Nest app in probably a year or so. My favourite though is the latest Chromecast with GoogleTV, I love it. Each to their own.

Here’s hoping they release a hardwired floodlight cam. I really want one but right now Ring is the only one really doing it and I don’t really want that as I don’t want yet another app and subscription.

I ended up going with 2 wifi/LED motion sensing flood lights and coiled around a blink camera around the existing floodlight. Was a cheaper solution and works very well without any drilling or fixture replacement. The blink (at the time I purchased) didn’t require a subscription fee and offered free cloud storage.

But how is it powered? Battery? I want one that can do CVR. No wireless one does that I’m aware of, as the battery would drain in a day (as it does with my Wyze Cam outdoor if I try to do an all day time-lapse).

So, I need one that wires into mains voltage or I would need a floodlight that has an outlet on it…which I’ve never actually looked for but you’d think with all these cameras might now exist. I’m not interested in a full time power brick and wire coming from one of my ground-level outlets up up where I want to put a camera.

The lights can work anytime as they plug in. The camera is battery powered and I’m well in to year 2 without having to replace it. But it’s more of a view once in a while and get motion alerts kind of thing, so your use case may differ based on what you’ve described. It was a budget option that worked for my needs since Nest hasn’t offered a flood light option.

This is surprising to me only because I never saw the IQ cameras discounted anywhere. I’ve been in the market for a couple for awhile now but had been holding out to hopefully catch a sale at some point because they were so darn expensive. I even looked around on Black Friday and Cyber Monday and the outdoor IQ seemed like the only Google product not discounted. Well, here’s hoping the new products are as good but cheaper.

Posted  on Jan 6, 2021 | 8:50 AM

I can see them making the current nest cam cheaper and introducing a new one.

Posted  on Jan 6, 2021 | 9:02 AM

I have also been waiting on a discount on the IQ and it has never happened to my knowledge.

They really need to get the original down to $80 max and whatever replaces the IQ at $150 or so. They should really just be giving them away for people who commit to the subscription. It’s hard for me to recommend their cameras with all the improvements Wyze has been making over the years.

"Google confirms plans for new Nest Cam lineup this year" = Discounting Nest Cam IQ Outdoor

That’s pretty light on information for that big title. The rest of the lineup, including potential new products, wasn’t confirmed.

I wonder if they’ll finally integrate to Android TV an option to pop-up a PIP feed of the camera when someone rings the door would be quite handy

Posted  on Jan 6, 2021 | 9:09 AM

This would be incredible. I don’t want to fully interrupt my program to see the camera but would love to have it PiP. Would be ultra handy for new parents using it as a baby monitor as well.

Great, all my nest products have been great, I want more cameras. But am hoping prices improve!

Posted  on Jan 6, 2021 | 9:42 AM

I’m really hoping prices get a bit cheaper for their cameras. I’ve got a Wyze cam right now and I wouldn’t mind dropping $50-$100 for a nest cam just to integrate everything into my Google ecosystem but there’s not really any deals outside of used products on the Facebook marketplace.

Posted  on Jan 6, 2021 | 9:57 AM

IMO, they should drop the Nest Indoor Cam price to like $70. Right now, it’s really uncompetitive with the Ring Indoor Cam, and only worthwhile if you’re all in on Google’s ecosystem.

The greatest thing Google/Nest can release this year are:
1. A better smart home UI (either merge the nest app with Google Home or modernize the Nest App)
2. Allow us G-Suite users to use our accounts for Nest – there are many of us who either were suckered into the free account back in the day or use G-Suite for ad-free Gmail/family domains/email but get locked out certain Google features for no good reason.

Posted  on Jan 6, 2021 | 10:43 AM

On #1 they are 90% there and yes, I hope they finalize it this year.
Only things left are:
- thermostat advanced settings
- smoke detectors (this was already demoed in Beta)
Nest app is an really old app based on ancient framework and not even worth touching. Just kill it
