Brave, a privacy-oriented, Chromium-based web browser, has been updated to add native Apple Silicon support for first-gen M1 Macs.

Brave’s big claim to fame is that it blocks ads and website trackers by default. It also lets users compensate creators by sending them cryptocurrency contributions, called Basic Attention Tokens.

Founded by Mozilla co-founder Brendan Eich and Brian Bondy, Brave first appeared on the market in early 2016. However, it wasn’t until November 2019 — when it had attracted a reported 8.7 million monthly active users — that the first stable version, 1.0, was released.

It’s a very fast web browser and, while it’s still very much a minor player in the overall browser wars, it’s nonetheless worth checking out. If you’re looking for a web browser that isn’t owned by Apple, Google or Mozilla, this could be one to explore.

Brave previously received Apple’s recommendation, with the browser reportedly featuring as one of the “New Apps We Love” in the App Store.
