What’s Happening New Year’s Eve & New Year’s Day in Philly

Delicious takeout, last-chance holiday attractions and outdoor fun...

Philly is so ready for 2021. And we’re not alone.

Travel + Leisure and Conde Nast Traveler recently named Philadelphia one of the must-visit destinations in the world for 2021. That’s cause for celebration, and there are many fun, safe ways to say goodbye to 2020 and start the new year right in Greater Philadelphia.

New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day do look a little different this year. In accordance with the City of Philadelphia’s moratorium on large events, the New Year’s Eve fireworks on the Delaware River waterfront and the January 1 Mummers Parade will not take place this year.

But holiday attractions like the Deck the Hall Holiday Lights, Garden Railway at Morris Arboretum and the Winter on Broad Street welcome visitors for a few more days. And Blue Cross RiverRink Winterfest has extended hours for extra New Year’s Eve fun.

Plus, virtual, kid-friendly New Year’s Eve celebrations at Franklin Square and the Please Touch Museum keep traditions going, and revelers can enjoy the holiday from home with curated dining experiences from top restaurants.

If you’re out and about for the holiday, remember your mask. Masks are required in the five-county region in all indoor public spaces, as well as any outdoor space where social distancing isn’t possible. (Swoop sets a good example.) Another tip: Plan ahead, as many events recommend or require advanced tickets. Read more on visitphilly.com.

Below, find things to do in Greater Philadelphia for New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day.

You can still enjoy New Year’s Eve fireworks to ring in 2021 — and from the comfort of your couch, no less. While the City of Philadelphia’s moratorium on large events means there won’t be a display over the Delaware River this year, get yourself in the spirit of the new year by watching last year’s impressive show. The dazzling pyrotechnics make for a fun viewing experience with your New Year’s Eve takeout (see below for options). Top it off with a screening of last year’s first-place performance by the South Philadelphia String Band during the Mummer’s Parade.

Virtual Celebrations for the Family

Snuggle up at home with the family and celebrate the start of 2021 early with virtual celebrations from Franklin Square and Please Touch Museum. The Winter in Franklin Square presented by Citizens Virtual New Year’s Eve Family Celebration kicks off at 5 p.m. with crafts, dance lessons and the Electrical Spectacle Holiday Light Show, followed by the 6 p.m. virtual Square Drop. Or start the new year even earlier with the Countdown from Home on the Please Touch Museum’s website. Tune in any time on December 31 for virtual activities, crafts, music and an appearance from Squiggles the mascot. Bonus: the Winter in Franklin Square in-person experience has been extended to February 28, so New Year’s Day revelers can mask up for mini-golf, the light show and more.
