Beijing (PingWest)- Chinese smartphone maker OPPO has launched a 5G innovation lab in India, despite anti-China sentiment toward Chinese tech firms following a violent clash between Indian and Chinese troops along Himalayas border.

Located at OPPO’s Hyderabad R&D centre in Southern India’s Telangana state, OPPO said that the Lab will develop core technologies for its 5G connected mobile ecosystem. In addition, OPPO said it plans to open three more innovation labs that will focus on cameras, power & batteries, and performance.

“With this lab setup, while we work towards developing core technologies for 5G era and strengthen the overall ecosystem, we also aim to support India in its 5G journey,” Tasleem Arif, Vice President&Head, R&D OPPO India, said.

Chinese smartphone makers such as Xiaomi, Oppo and Vivo have took a large share of the handset market in India. According to data complied by research firm Canalys, China top four smartphone brands increased their combined share in India to 73.2% from 69.5% a year ago. Oppo ranked the country’s fifth-largest smartphone vendor with a 12.1% share.

“India is the second-largest market for Oppo after China, representing about 20 per cent of the vendor’s smartphone shipments in the third quarter. Despite the political tensions, consumer demand for Chinese affordable smartphones has remained high, “said Ahmed Ahmed, Malaysia-based market analyst for research firm IDC.

Alen Wu, vice president and president of global sales at OPPO said that OPPO’s sale have not been mainly affected by border conflict and the company would continue to made heavy investment in the country.

“We will still continue with the operation of our factories there, and may even continue increasing our investments there in the future – India is, after all, a huge market.” Alen Wu said.
