AdDuplex: Windows 10 version 20H2 crosses 10% usage as 1909 falls again

With just a few days to go before the end of the year, AdDuplex has released its final monthly report on Windows 10 usage for 2020. As usual, this data is collected from about 5,000 apps in the Microsoft Store, which are using the AdDuplex SDK v2 or higher, and the data refers to December 28. Nearly 80,000 PCs were surveyed in this period, which is lower than the usual sample size of 100,000 for these reports.

The numbers show that Windows 10 version 20H2, the latest release of the operating system, has grown further to reach 13.6% usage share, up from 8.8% in November. Likewise, version 2004, the May 2020 Update, also grew as more users moved on from older versions of the OS, and is now at 40.4%, up from 37.6%.

Last month, version 1909 had actually grown and nearly matched version 2004 in usage share, but in December, it dropped back to 33.2%, from 36.4%, and is closer to its October numbers. Meanwhile, version 1903 fell even further and is now in the single digits, sitting at just 7.1%, down from 10.2%. Pretty much every older version of Windows 10 dropped to some degree. Version 1809 is now at 1.5% instead of 2%, 1803 is at 1.7% instead of 2.2%, and those running version 1709 or earlier now account for 2.2% of users, down from 2.4%. Insiders remained still at 0.3% usage share.

Looking at the adoption trends, Windows 10 version 20H2 seems to have slowed down its adoption rate this month, possibly because users aren't bothering with updates as much during the holiday season.

To put that in perspective, the November 2019 Update, which is this version's equivalent from last year, was at 15.2% in the January 2020 report (AdDuplex didn't share a report for December 2019). It's likely that version 20H2 will reach or surpass that by that time.
