Why? Because it only sounds okay until you actually consciously become a participant. Then it suddenly feels creepy. Why? Because it is. That's your brain telling you that being constantly watched is inhumane and cruel. You already know this is wrong. Listen to yourself!

“currently students do not know what they look like.”

Hey, students at universities using this garbage, gimme some photos of these things to show Rick Carter that you know what his surveillance crap looks like, because I'd be willing to bet that you do!

Image
Are you a minority? Do you have a disability? Are you just not exactly like the average student? You're going to be targeted by your school for extra surveillance scrutiny. It's for your own good, apparently...

*knock knock knock* "hey Sasha are you okay? It's the council of elrond^w^w^wstudent services! The unblinking eye of sauron says you're 80% less social than the median student in your demographics! Are you okay?"

This must have really been a good day for Sasha.

What could go wrong?

"He said he squandered several of his early lectures trying to convince the app he was present…he then had to defend himself to campus staff members, who believed the data more than him."

Fortunately, the University is devoting teaching resources to handling this case, letting a tech company get away with making a pretty penny to not fix bugs. Which is fine because presumably schools are so overstaffed compared to industry.

Seems normal

"some students were alarmed to see an unknown man enter their classroom, stick a small device near their desks, and walk away"

There's a lot of professors who are pretty unhappy about turning their classrooms into surveillance states.

“You’re forcing students into a position,”

said: “Be tracked or be left out.”

'He blamed the exodus on misunderstanding and a “reactionary ‘cancel culture’ thing.”'

Could you be more condescending,

? Maybe students and objected because tracking students is invasive and reprehensible? Maybe they should cancel their contract with you?
