The Great Conjunction, Winter Solstice, Christmas Day, and This Week in Astrology

The astrology of December 21 — December 27

Word for the week

Get into the business of being human.

Three things

  • Winter Solstice / Capricorn Season has begun. Time to make things shake.
  • The Great Conjunction isn’t a wild spiritual event, but it is a shift in what it means to be profitable and human.
  • How far are you willing to go in a fight?

Moons of the week

Don’t forget to record how you feel as the moon changes signs. In a month or two, you will see a pattern. Take note!

  • Moon in Pisces — 12/19 @ 6:39 a.m. CT
  • Moon enters Aries — 12/21 @ 4:32 p.m. CT
  • Moon enters Taurus — 12/24 @ 4:55 a.m. CT
  • Moon enters Gemini — 12/26 @ 5:33 p.m. CT

Summary of the week

Monday brings the Winter Solstice as the Sun enters Capricorn at 4:02 a.m. CT. From here on out, the daylight increases by two minutes per day. Capricorn Season wants to help us reflect on how our bones are doing and testing how well we can maneuver. Is your base strong? Dream it, document it, and then get down to business.

At 12:21 p.m. CT the Great Conjunction forms between Jupiter and Saturn in Aquarius, showing us where innovation, community, and opportunity intersect. This is a rare occurrence as Jupiter and Saturn meet every 20 years and are doing so in air signs after over 200 years of being in earth signs. This conjunction is all about doing the work it takes to be free — individually, and collectively.

Saturn is a harsh taskmaster, especially in a fixed sign like Aquarius. Aquarius energy can be full of peace, friendship, and humanity, but do not mistake the other end of the spectrum. Aquarius likes to connect, but exclusion is the flipside of inclusion and as our world begins to meld in ways that many don’t like, we may find many rebelling against the process of creating a humane, global community. This is where we learn the tough lessons of being human. Do what you say you will or stay silent. Rewards will not be given to lazy thinkers under these skies. If you’re dedicated to being silly, you’ll get goofy results. Edit and enhance your network with a discerning eye. Build friendships genuinely yet intelligently.

Wednesday morning brings a potent square between Mars (in Aries) and Pluto (in Capricorn) that can feel like a perfect storm of confrontations and power grabs. It can be an energetically impactful yet volatile day that can lead you to act in the interest of deep transformation. Intentional destruction can go a long way if you remove things in the right method and order. However, simply knocking things around won’t do. Select your battles wisely. People (including you) will definitely be quicker to fight and more ruthless in the process.

As the day progresses, Mercury (in Capricorn) squares up with Chiron (in Aries) delivering more messages and drama from Mars-Pluto. This transit could inspire wounds regarding the misuse of power, especially in the military and government. This could be a big news day regarding raggedy leadership and we could see another tantrum from the Oval. As a collective, we are addressing wounds around authority and taking action, especially as it relates to impulse and its effect on legacy.

On Friday, it’s Christmas in the States, and this year the best gifts will be all about quality and engaging our senses. If you need to get a last minute gift, try something that’s useful for their relaxation, goals, or home. Mercury (in Capricorn) harmonizes with Uranus (in Taurus) and stimulates conversations on the economy and business — especially green, sustainable business. Under this transit we are seeing corporations, capitalism, and spending in a new way. This year has taught us that we need to see our resources in a new fashion. Moving forward, we’re going to need innovative yet practical ways to make money and quantify value.

Saturday brings the sun (in Capricorn) and Chiron (in Aries) together into a collision that digs up moments where an elder may have made you feel less than. The goal of this transit is to take pride in yourself despite the pain and criticism you’ve endured. How has your experience informed your current wisdom? What wounds did you work away? Which ones are still left to go?

On Sunday, the sun (in Capricorn) harmonizes with Uranus (in Taurus) as a follow-up to the Mercury-Uranus conversation. We may hear news about agriculture, beauty, and environment-related companies and leaders. Collectively, we could feel impatient and want to crystallize our new ideas ASAP. Before you get too carried away, get in touch with your senses and work ethic. What do you want and how does it feel in the flesh?

Next week at a glance

  • On 12/29, we have a Cancer Full Moon at 9:28 p.m. CT, which is our last full moon of the year. Reflect and get into your emotions. Take stock of where you were back in January (when we had another Cancer Full Moon).
  • Get ready to tangle with a bit of Neptune as we make sense of the unexpected feelings and fantasies floating in the air.

Editor’s Note About This Week’s Reading for Individual Signs: Please enjoy this astrological reading for the collective. The Individual Signs, usually found in this portion of the ZORAscope, will return in 2021.
