iPhone 12 and 12 Pro quickly became world’s best-selling 5G smartphones

Within just a couple of weeks of its launch, the iPhone 12 had become the world’s bestselling 5G smartphone model, according to figures published by Counterpoint Research.

What was second place for the month of October? The iPhone 12 Pro, of course.

The figures, if accurate, are particularly impressive because, taken over the month of October, they show Apple holding the no. 1 and no. 2 spots despite the fact that the iPhone 12 models were only available for purchase for half of the month. Altogether, the iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Pro reportedly captured 1/4 of total 5G smartphone sales in the month.

Another recent report suggested that each of the iPhone 12 models have sold much better than their predecessors released in the past three years.

Counterpoint writes that:

“Going forward, the demand for the iPhone 12 series is likely to remain strong through Q4 2020, especially during the festive season in December. Strong sales for Apple will also drive the volumes in the premium segment, raising the global ASP. Due to the late launch, some of the sales will be pushed to subsequent months, thus maintaining the momentum of the iPhone 12 series in early 2021 as well. Through the iPhone 12 series, Apple has also given a much-needed push to the 5G smartphone market, which cornered its highest ever share of 24% in the global smartphone sales in October.”

One interesting point would be to look at how many people actually bought the iPhone 12 for its 5G capabilities. Right now 5G is limited because of the still-rolling-out infrastructure. It’s likely that the power of 5G won’t truly become apparent for another year or so. Still, there are plenty of compelling reasons to buy an iPhone 12 series device that don’t involve 5G at all.

How much of a selling point was 5G for you? Have you bought an iPhone 12? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below.
