Office Hours 06: How to Get More Clients

posted on August 27, 2020

Jason Resnick was our special guest in our last office hours. Jason is a web developer who helps other freelancers build better systems around getting more profitable clients.

You can watch a full replay below:

What we talked about:

  • How to find  clients when you’re just starting out as a freelancer.
  • How to acquire clients on a more consistent basis when you already have an established freelance business.
  • How to  attract better and high-paying clients and become a successful freelancer.

Key takeaways from our discussion:

  1. Start by using your existing network of people. Let everyone know that you’re available for work and what kind of services you offer. Write a personal message to each person, so it doesn’t look like marketing spam.
  2. Post an honest and short message on all of your social media platforms that you are able to take on new clients. Ask people to retweet and tag someone  they might know.
  3. Create your website, set up a newsletter, and start writing about your work.
  4. If you don’t have any projects in your portfolio, develop some personal and fake client projects. Show your skills.
  5. Start building some connections with more popular designers and developers by buying their products, asking them questions, and having more interactions on social networks. Become a part of their community. They’ll remember you.
  6. Use platforms like UpWork and Elance only in the short-term to get those first clients. Focus more on building your own network around your own personal brand.
  7. Take care of your network, message them once in a while and remind them about yourself. Try to be helpful and provide value to your clients.
  8. Become a fan of your clients’ businesses. Share their content on social networks and support their new products and services.
  9. To establish a more consistent stream of leads, partner up with some bigger agencies and studios. See if they would be open to outsource some work to you.
