  • Logz.io Infrastructure Monitoring: Grafana and Kibana are Better Together

In the midst of a complex and challenging global environment, I’m proud and excited to announce General Availability for Logz.io Infrastructure Monitoring, our new metrics monitoring and analytics solution based on Grafana. Additionally, we’re supporting Early Availability for our new Distributed Tracing offering powered by Jaeger. The release represents a huge next step in our mission to provide the best open source for observability as a fully managed, cost-effective cloud service.

For the first time ever, engineers can use Grafana and Kibana – the most powerful and widely used open source metric and log analytics tools, respectively – on one integrated, easy-to-use SaaS platform. The result is a unified observability experience to help engineers quickly identify and resolve production issues in distributed cloud environments.

Following three months of intensive beta with the participation from more than 800 companies, we’re proud to offer this general availability solution with the following capabilities:

  • The Grafana you already know, delivered as a fully managed cloud service.
  • Correlate metrics with the associated logs for fast, effective root cause analysis of production issues.
  • 18 months metric data retention at an affordable cost. We’ve decided to provide the same pricing for both infrastructure and custom metrics.
  • Premade monitoring dashboards for common infrastructure services like Azure, AWS, and GCP as well as common DevOps technologies like Docker and Kubernetes.

Why We Brought Grafana and Kibana Together

Those looking to gain observability into their cloud need to balance a variety of factors when looking for metric and log analytics solutions.

Most proprietary solutions come bundled with steep upfront costs and learning curves, which can be tough pills to swallow. Open source offers many contrasting qualities: it’s accessible, easy to integrate with other DevOps technologies, and provides a robust support community of like minded engineers – to name a few.

Teams looking for the most popular open source observability tools would use Grafana for metrics analytics and the ELK Stack for log analytics.

While these are powerful solutions for monitoring metrics and logs individually, using separate observability tools creates siloed, disconnected metric and log data – which delays response time to production issues by requiring engineers to query different data on different tools. Additionally, using the ELK Stack and Grafana requires significant engineering resources to set up the data pipelines and ensure the tools are reliable, performant, and secure. This is especially challenging as organizations scale their cloud environments.

By unifying Grafana and the ELK Stack on a fully managed SaaS platform, Logz.io customers can seamlessly scale with their business on the open source they prefer.

Engineers no longer need to switch between Grafana and Kibana when analyzing metrics and logs, rather, they can correlate metrics with their associated logs for fast, effective troubleshooting (see the GIF below!). DevOps teams can say goodbye to configuring and managing metric and log data pipelines – Logz.io offers a resilient, scalable, and cloud agnostic solution that makes data shipping seamless.

Uniting Grafana and Kibana onto a single, integrated platform reduces the overhead, and ultimately engineering costs, of observability.

Logz.io users can correlate metrics with their associated logs to quickly begin investigating production issues they find in their metrics.

What our customers can expect

During the Infrastructure Monitoring private Beta, we have been thrilled with the high levels of product engagement, enthusiasm, and feedback from our customers, who are already seeing significant value from the offering. It is with this validation that we decided to make Infrastructure Monitoring Generally Available to any customer who would like to try it – solidifying the solution as a key pillar of the Logz.io Cloud Observability Platform.

Customers can expect the same highly-available service and our 24/7 customer support rockstars to help you with any questions or advice. To begin using Infrastructure Monitoring, click on the “Metrics” tab in the top menu bar – try it for free with up to 1000 unique metrics. From there, go to the “Send Your Data” tab to learn how to ship your metrics to Logz.io. We’ll store your metric data for 18 months so you can analyze trends over time.

For those already using Infrastructure Monitoring, we have some exciting enhancements to share. With our new launch, you can now configure your own alerts within Grafana visualizations. Users can build simple alerts based on defined thresholds or more advanced alerts by adding multiple trigger conditions and queries. In addition to alerts, we’ve added rate functions to make it easier to examine trends in your metrics from multiple hosts.
