Announcing Oracle WebLogic Server 14.1.1

Oracle is excited to announce the release of Oracle WebLogic Server Version 14.1.1!  Oracle WebLogic Server 14.1.1 is a new major version, adding support for Java Platform, Enterprise Edition (Java EE) 8, and Java SE 8 and 11.   It is supported on-premises and in the cloud, including support and tooling for running Oracle WebLogic Server in containers and Kubernetes, and certification on Oracle Cloud.   We integrate with a wide variety of platforms and Oracle software that deliver high performance and availability for your applications, with low cost of ownership.   Software is available for download from Oracle Technology Network and Oracle Sofware Delivery Cloud and you can view our updated product documentation here.

Updated Java EE and Java SE Support

Oracle WebLogic Server 14.1.1 includes support for Java EE 8, the latest Java EE version with new APIs for modern enterprise applications.  Servlet 4.0 includes HTTP/2 support, offering improved application performance with compatibility for existing Web applications.   JAX-RS 2.1 advances REST services support by offering a reactive client programming model, and Server-Sent Events for pushing events to application clients. The JSON-P 1.1 and JSON-B 1.0 standards deliver new capabilities for processing JSON documents.   Together with improvements to CDI and Bean Validation, these improvements expand support for building modern applications using the standards-based, proven Java EE platform.  We are currently testing Oracle WebLogic Server for Jakarta EE 8 compatibility as well, and should have results soon.

Oracle WebLogic Server’s Java SE strategy is to support Java SE Long Term Support (LTS) releases in new Oracle WebLogic Server versions as they are delivered.    Oracle WebLogic Server 14.1.1 is supported on Java SE 11, so that development teams have the option to use new Java SE 11 capabilities in their applications.   We also continue to support Java SE 8, to give users the option to use the Java SE versions they may already be using for their Oracle WebLogic Server 12.1.3 or 12.2.1.X versions.   Developers will have a choice between two Java SE versions, with long support lifecycles, to use in their Oracle WebLogic Server applications.

Cloud Support

Oracle WebLogic Server 14.1.1 is certified to run on Docker and CRI-O containers and on Kubernetes, both on-premises and in public clouds, similar to the certification that has been provided with version 12.2.1.X.  The same container-native, open source tools we have implemented to support 12.2.1.X applications on Kubernetes, and that we have enhanced on an ongoing basis over the past year, can also be used with Oracle WebLogic Server 14.1.1.  See links below to:

Customers will have many options for deploying 14.1.1 applications on Oracle Cloud Infrastructure, or other Authorized Cloud Environments.

New Technology Integration

Oracle continues to integrate Oracle WebLogic Server with other technologies to deliver improved application performance and availability with compatibility, investment protection and low cost. Oracle Coherence 14.1.1, also being released today, is fully integrated and certified with Oracle WebLogic Server 14.1.1, offering customers continued performance and availability benefits, along with new Oracle Coherence features.  Oracle WebLogic Server has been certified to run on GraalVM Enterprise Edition 19.3, offering performance benefits of up to 5%-10%.   Integration with the Oracle Database Edition-Based Redefinition (EBR) feature enables coordination of application updates with database changes.  And both Kubernetes and non-Kubernetes users should evaluate the use of the Oracle WebLogic Server Deploy Tooling to simplify domain lifecycle management operations.

Platform Support and Upgradeability

In addition to Oracle Database and Oracle Java SE, we continue to certify Oracle WebLogic Server with other Oracle technologies, such as Oracle Linux, Oracle Linux Cloud Native Environment, Oracle Private Cloud Appliance, and a long list of third party platforms and databases.   Customers will be empowered to flexibly upgrade existing applications to 14.1.1, where they can leverage 14.1.1 compatibility with prior releases, compatibility with platforms previously supported, and also leverage updated application development and deployment capabilities.   All of this means protection for the investment you make in your Oracle WebLogic Server applications, and options for evolving applications to meet the future needs of your organizations.

We invite you to try Oracle WebLogic Server 14.1.1, and also to monitor this blog to track additional announcements that will give you more options for building and deploying your applications on-premises or in the cloud.
