虽然 IPv6 普及度在逐渐提高，但 IPv4 仍然活着。在唱衰 IPv4 许多年之后，它仍然活着好好的。尽管如此，互联网之父 Vint Cerf 呼吁尽可能快的升级到 IPv6。目前 IPv6 普及度接近四分之一，Vint Cerf 指出这还不够，称有很多理由升级到 IPv6，企业可以通过灰市拍卖购买 IPv4 地址段，但 IPv6 地址空间更廉价更充足。
根据 Internet Society 的报告，有 24 个国家的 IPv6 流量比重超过了 15%，49 个国家 IPv6 流量超过 5%，前 100 万 Alexa 域名有 17% 支持 IPv6，中国、西班牙、俄罗斯、南非、意大利和南非的 IPv6 普及度依旧不到 5%。
